In addition to cash donations, Great Minds Learning Center is always in need of additional educational tools and office supplies.  We welcome gifts of all kinds.  From donations to our scholarship program to purchasing books and teaching tools, our students appreciate the support!

Here are some ideas of things we could use:

  • Support for our scholarship fund  - We offer scholarships to students who qualify for free/reduced lunch.  These scholarships make one-on-one assistance available to students who may otherwise not be able to receive it.  We typically award $1,000/month in scholarships, so every dollar donated helps!
  • Screening scholarships - Provide a free initial intake screening for a low-income student.  This scholarship allows families to better understand their child's learning difficulties and develop a plan for addressing them.
  • Operational support - Consider monthly (or annual) operational support through contributions to our rent, internet, or phone bill.  Your support helps us keep up with rising costs while keeping fees affordable for students.
  • Teacher Training -  Help us help our tutors by paying for additional training.
  • Technology - We regulary use iPads with our students and could use several more for our growing student base.  Our Hibbing office is in need of an all-in-one wireless printer.
  • Teaching Tools - We appreciate donations toward the purchase of books, technology and other teaching materials.
  • Office Supplies - Toner for our copy machine, printer ink, paper, sticky notes, etc. is always appreciated!
  • Volunteers -  We love volunteers!  Volunteers may tutor, serve on our board of directors, or help us fundraise.

Please contact us with any questions about specific needs you would like to help with.

Homework struggles. Children who don’t want to go to school.  Teachers reporting that your child is behind in reading.

If you’ve dealt with these issues, it’s possible your child has trouble reading.

Studies show that as many in one in 5 people have difficulty reading.

But could it be dyslexia?

Dyslexia is primarily associated with trouble reading, but it can also affect writing, spelling, speaking and math.

Just a few common warning signs of dyslexia:

  • Trouble memorizing address, phone number or the alphabet
  • A close relative with dyslexia
  • Inconsistent performance on school work
  • Letter and number reversals
  • Slow, choppy, and inaccurate reading
  • Skips or misreads simple words and word endings
  • Terrible spelling
  • Difficulty reading and spelling irregular sight words (does, said, off…)
  • Trouble memorizing math facts
  • Difficulty learning to tie shoes

The best way to help someone with reading difficulties is through effective, systematic, multi-sensory instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

We help students with reading difficulties every day through a variety of services.

At Great Minds Learning Center, we help children and adults develop effective reading, writing, and math skills necessary to accomplish their educational and personal goals.

But don't the schools do that?

Yes and no. While our schools do an excellent job educating typical learners, students with learning disabilities like dyslexia often slip through the cracks.  A child who is behind in reading has to progress at a rate that significantly exceeds the norm.  This task is especially difficult for struggling students who share their teacher's attention with 25+ other students.

We can help students by providing specialized, individual instruction in language and math. Our caring teachers follow proven instructional methods that are specifically tailored to students with learning disabilities. In fact, many of our students have seen a 40 to 50 percent increase in their reading skills as a result of our instruction.

Your support of Great Minds Learning Center allows us to help students reach their academic goals and become successful, productive members of our community.

Why do you need my help? Doesn't insurance cover the cost of tutoring?

No.  Currently, health insurance does not cover the cost of our services. As a nonprofit organization, we strive to keep our overhead costs low and rely on donations from people just like you to keep our rates low.  We want to be able to help all struggling students regardless of their economic status.

Why should I support Great Minds Learning Center?

Your donation is tax-deductible and you'll feel good knowing you are making a difference in students' lives.  We've helped more than 200 students improve their reading and math skills and with your help, we can reach even more. It's also really easy to support us. (We're very appreciative!)
